What year was my Winchester manufactured? (Serial Number Reference)
Winchester Firearms Manufacturing Dates by Serial Number and Year 1866 through the early 1990s
Below is the download link for a special resource for dating Winchester firearms. These pages were scanned from documents compiled over the years by the customer service department of Winchester Repeating Arms. None of the page scans are of original documents but are simply transcribed information typed into a word processing program. In general, this information is the same that you would get if you called our customer service department and asked them for the information. They use these documents as a reference and the documents should be limited to that use.

There are many “legends” about why the historic serial number records for Winchester rifles and shotguns are not complete or why they are not always verifiable. A few reasons cited are:
- A fire at the factory
- Inadvertent destruction (during office cleaning)
- Records simply lost in filing
- Records misplaced between ownership transitions
- Documents borrowed but not returned
There is probably some kernel of truth to all of them. But the fact remains; there is no original, single, totally accurate database of serial numbers from 1866 forward that we are aware of. But perhaps these pages can help you somewhat in your research.
Please keep the following points in mind as you explore these pages:
- Many of the Winchester brand firearms produced over the years are included, but not all. If your firearm is not listed, we probably do not have any additional information.
- Before the 1990s the Winchester Repeating Arms firearms brand transferred ownership several times. Any information before the 1990s is always difficult to verify.
- In general, only serial number ranges with an approximate year are provided in this document. There is no other detail beyond this that we can provide.
- Since this information was provided through old documents (both official and otherwise), no representation is made that all serial number and year combinations are totally accurate.
- In some exceptional cases, a more detailed, accurate determination can be made by calling the Winchester Repeating Arms Historian at the Morgan, Utah office. 800-333-3288. Ask for the Winchester Repeating Arms Historian.

- No attempt has been made to determine the value of any guns listed.

Savage Model 101 Pistol
Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “MODEL 101 – 22 CAL. L.R.”. The top of the barrel is marked “SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION / CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.”. The bottom of the grip frame is marked “1026”. The underside of the frame on the left side of the trigger guard is marked with a heart shaped inspection mark.
Barrel Length: 4 ¼”
Samsung innovation spiffs. Sights / Optics: The front sight is quarter round blade fixed to the top of the barrel. There rear sight is a square notch that is dovetailed into the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth dark hardwood with an Indian Head logo stamped into the tops of the grips. The grips have a mottled brown and black coloring. There is a small hairline surface crack on the bottom edge of the left grip and another on the bottom edge of the right. The bottom surfaces of the grips are rough under their lacquered finish from lack of surface preparation at the factory. The grips show only a few very light handling marks. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: The barrel, ejector rod housing and cylinder are blued steel. The alloy frame has a matte black painted finish.
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 94% of its metal finish. The barrel shows a few tiny marks on the left side of the muzzle and scratches on its underside where the ejector rod button rubs. There are dings and scratches through the finish on the portion of the barrel just in front of the cylinder on the right side. There is finish loss on the front edges of the frame, the sides of the trigger guard, and the bottom edges of the grip frame. There are handling marks and drag lines in the sides of the frame, a few of which are through the finish. There is thinning on the edges of the cylinder along with a few tiny marks. The grip screw is sharp. The markings are crisp. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The pistol has a rebounding hammer. The barrel and cylinder pivot together when pushed from the left side with the hammer down to reveal the single chamber at the top of the cylinder. With the cylinder swung out, the ejector can be used to remove the fired cartridge case, and the bore is accessible for cleaning. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: With all of the westerns on TV in the 1950’s, single action revolvers and cap guns resembling single action revolvers were all the rage. This is a single shot revolver based on what looks like a single action revolver, except in this case the cylinder does not spin. The cylinder and barrel rotate to the right side for loading/ejecting cartridges and for cleaning the bore. This Savage Model 101 pistol is in about Fine condition with a bright bore with sharp rifling. The barrel and cylinder are blued steel, but the frame is alloy, which makes this “revolver” nice and light. It should make some youngster very happy if given to them as their first gun.
